Gus Cardon
Training Co-ordinator,
NS (Dutch Railways)

The logistics of co-ordinating the training for some 500 managers, drivers and train guards at NS, the Dutch Railways organisation, is quite a challenge. Such is the task of Gus Cardon within a region covering Alkmaar, Den Helder, Hoorn and Enkhuizen in North Holland.

Working closely together with the national train operator's training and development centre in Utrecht, Gus arranges workshops and courses in areas as diverse as languages, first aid and fire prevention. Gus explains that several guards, whose knowledge of Dutch was not up to standard, needed to be trained in the legal issues that come into play when confronted with passengers that do not have a ticket and are being asked to show ID.

"Initially, NS tried to organise and set up a Dutch language course on their own, but they soon found out this was too costly," comments Gus.

"We then decided to seek help with PCI. After an in-take interview and detailed evaluation of our specific needs, PCI created a programme based on our existing course material and tailored to suit the train guards' needs." Working with PCI has been a real pleasure, according to Gus.

"Throughout the course PCI constantly monitored the guards' progress and performance as well as the quality of the course material. Additionally, the lessons were scheduled in such a way that there was never a conflict with their shifts."
