Australian-born expat Deborah Storer moved to the Netherlands a few years ago and works for Kerr-McGee Pigments BV in Rozenburg, the Dutch subsidiary of Kerr-McGee Corporation.
A global energy and inorganic chemical company, Kerr-McGee is also the world's third-largest producer and marketer of titanium dioxide pigment, the preferred whitener and opacifier for a variety of everyday products. As an area engineer, Deborah must ensure that the area of the plant she's responsible for is up to the required standard as far as environmental and safety procedures are concerned.
"Most of the operating procedures and other documentation are in Dutch, so you will understand I need to have more than just a basic understanding of those documents," explains Deborah. Before enlisting the help of PCI, Deborah had studied a Dutch course at the 'Volksuniversiteit' [university department for extramural studies], but it was far too slow and general for what she needed.
"I really wanted to be able to learn and use the vocabulary and expressions that I need in my work," she continues. "It was also important to do my e-mails in Dutch and not make the same mistakes time and time again."
All in all, Deborah feels that the training's been quite useful and especially thanks PCI for being so flexible in accommodating her plans, up to a point where she had to cancel a lesson at the very last minute and PCI was able to reschedule it without any extra cost.
